Maxwell, Anderson. The Portrait Medallions of the Imperial Villa at Boscotrecase. American Journal of Archaeology., Vol. 91, (Jan., 1987), pp. 127-135
This is a journal article discussing the possible identities of the two figures in medallion shaped portraits from the Black Room at the Imperial Villa at Boscotrecase. The article deals with my piece specifically. The identity of the portraits and the research surrounding their discovery shed light on the history of the piece.
Elfriede, Knauer. Roman Wall Paintings from Boscotrecase: Three Studies in the Relationship between Writing and Painting. Metropolitan Museum Journal., Vol. 28, (1993), pp. 13-46
This article discusses three pieces of roman art and evaluates them from a historical perspective. One of the three pieces is the Black Room at Boscotrecase. The article looks specifically at the two egyptian paintings in the Black Room and the symbology behind them. The egyptian paintings are in my opinion the most culturally significant symbols in the piece and this article shed a lot of light on them.
Pappalardo, Umberto. The Splendor of Roman Wall Painting. Getty Publications., 2009
This is a book on roman wall painting. The book discusses and illustrates with pictures a great deal of roman wall paintings. It gives great insight to the three different styles of roman wall painting. It has quite a bit of information on the third style and a small section about the Imperial Villa at Boscotrecase. Though it provides little information on the Black room it does give valuable information about the Villa, third style wall painting and roman culture in general.
